What you should know about our most noteworthy asset
Because we at Lorenz serve “the land of 10,000 lakes,” and because Lorenz is a born-and-bred, very experienced Minnesota motorcoach company, we’d like to offer our own perspective on the best lakes in the state.
There are at least 11 types of lakes (MN has 8 of them). But the common characteristic among them is their effect on visitors.
Lakes can be energizing and calming. They inspire us with their purity, beauty, and connection to the earth and sky. Lakes mirror the heavens. Here are 10 you shouldn’t miss.
10 Minnesota lakes worth a visit
- Lake Superior: We are not alone in considering it the crown jewel of Minnesota's lakes. Lake Superior is a must-visit destination. This vast freshwater sea offers breathtaking views and numerous activities along its North Shore. Visitors can explore charming coastal towns like Duluth, Two Harbors, and Grand Marais, each offering unique attractions and accommodations. The lake's rugged shoreline provides ample opportunities for hiking, rock climbing, and photography. Don't miss the chance to watch massive ships enter the harbor in Duluth or take a scenic drive along the North Shore Scenic Drive.
- Lake Minnetonka: Located just west of Minneapolis, Lake Minnetonka is a popular retreat for city dwellers and tourists alike. Minnetonka is a large lake – nearly 23 square miles – and it’s renowned for its excellent boating, fishing, and water sports. The lake's shores are dotted with upscale restaurants, marinas, and beautiful homes. Visitors can enjoy activities like wake surfing, sailing, or simply relaxing on one of the lake's many beaches. The area also hosts several events throughout the year, including the famous Chilly Open ice golf tournament in winter.
- Gull Lake: Situated in the heart of the Brainerd Lakes area, we agree with those who say that Gull Lake is a quintessential Minnesota vacation destination. With nearly 40 miles of shoreline, it offers some of the state's best fishing, waterskiing, and swimming opportunities. The lake is surrounded by numerous resorts, including the renowned Grand View Lodge, making it perfect for family getaways. Visitors can also enjoy scenic boat cruises, golfing, and exploring the charming nearby towns of Brainerd and Nisswa.
- Mille Lacs Lake: As Minnesota's second-largest lake, Mille Lacs (pronounced “Mil-Lock”) is a paradise for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts. Located just 75 miles north of the Twin Cities, it's easy to reach for a weekend getaway. The lake is famous for its excellent walleye fishing, Grand Casino, and state parks, but it also offers opportunities for various water sports and boating activities. In winter, the lake transforms into an ice fishing haven, attracting thousands of anglers from across the region.
- Lake Vermilion: Among our favorite lakes is Lake Vermilion. We consider it best for those seeking a more rugged and untouched lake experience. With 365 islands and miles of pristine shoreline, it offers its own brand of intense, unspoiled natural beauty and tranquility. Visitors can enjoy canoeing, kayaking, and camping on secluded islands. The lake is also known for its excellent fishing, particularly for walleye and northern pike.
- Lake of the Woods: Straddling the U.S.-Canada border, Lake of the Woods is a vast wilderness playground. It's renowned for its year-round fishing opportunities (“The Walleye Capital of the World”), with winter ice fishing being particularly popular. The lake boasts over 65,000 miles of shoreline and 14,000 islands, providing endless exploration opportunities. Visitors can also experience the unique Northwest Angle, the northernmost point of the contiguous United States, accessible only by boat or through Canada.
- Chain of Lakes (Minneapolis): For an urban lake experience, the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes can't be beat. This interconnected system of lakes, including Bde Maka Ska (pronounced bid-day-mah-kahs-ka), Lake Harriet, and Lake of the Isles, offers a slice of nature in the heart of the city. Visitors can enjoy biking or walking along the shoreline paths, paddling between lakes, or simply relaxing on the beaches. The area also features several parks and dining options, making it an urban oasis unlike any other.
- Lake Pepin: Lake Pepin is actually a 22 mile long, 2-mile wide broadening of the Mississippi River, making it a naturally occurring lake that offers a unique blend of river and lake experiences. The area is known for its scenic beauty, charming river towns like Lake City, and excellent sailing conditions. Visitors can enjoy water sports, fishing, or take a leisurely cruise on a paddlewheel boat. The surrounding bluffs provide stunning views and opportunities for hiking and birdwatching. Frontenac State Park offers year-round natural beauty.
- Detroit Lake: Located in the heart of lake country, Detroit Lake is the centerpiece of the vibrant city community of Detroit Lakes. With over 400 lakes within a 25-mile radius, we think of it as a perfect base for exploring Minnesota's lake region. The lake offers excellent fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities. The town itself is known for its beaches, flea markets, and unique attractions like giant troll statues. Visitors can enjoy a range of accommodations from cozy cabins to lakeside hotels.
- Rainy Lake: For those seeking adventure in the northernmost part of Minnesota, Rainy Lake is an excellent choice. Straddling the U.S.-Canada border, it's part of Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota's only national park. The lake offers opportunities for boating, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Visitors can explore the lake's numerous islands, take guided boat tours, or even rent a houseboat for a truly unique experience. In winter, the frozen lake becomes a playground for ice fishing and snowmobiling enthusiasts. A less well-known fact: Voyageurs National Park is certified as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, meaning that it’s perfect for stargazing.
